DIPLOMA IN LEGAL EXECUTIVE STUDIES

The purpose of this programme is to provide learners with the fundamental knowledge required to enter essential support roles in law firms, government departments and other organisations. This qualification is also a prerequisite to becoming a Registered NZ Legal Executive.  

 

This programme is designed for those who are wanting a career change into a challenging and well-paid sector, have just completed high school and are looking at first steps into entering the legal profession, or are currently working in a role that requires in depth knowledge of the New Zealand legal system. Cross credit opportunities are available for those who have previously successfully completed relevant Legal Executive Diploma courses at a registered provider. 

Learners will gain a thorough understanding of the different aspects of the New Zealand legal system and environment.

PROGRAMME CONTENT:
  • The Practice of Law

  • The New Zealand Legal System

  • The Law and Practice of Commerce

  • The Law and Practice of Advocacy

  • Principles and Practice of Land Law

  • Trusts and Estate Law

DURATION & HOURS:

  • 40 weeks (including 4 week break)

  • Once in a week on campus; 4pm - 9pm

  • 3 days of online classes; 4pm - 9pm

  • Online lessons must be attended during set hours

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
  • Legal Executive

  • Personal assistant to Inhouse Legal Counsel

  • Court registry advisors

  • Legal assistant in banks, government departments, and other large companies
     

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Domestic students: must be over 16 years of age 
  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • NCEA Level 3 is recommended
  • International students: must be 18 years plus, meet the criteria above.
For all:
  • Students for whom English is not their first language must meet the English Proficiency Outcomes i.e. an IELTS score of at least 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 or equivalent

  • OR evidence of completion of level 5 study in NZ or relevant study (preferably a Law degree) overseas where the language of instruction was English.

  • OR evidence of relevant legal work experience of 5 years or more in NZ

  • Must undergo an interview to confirm their suitability for the programme, including a short statement of intent of study
